Thrice-crowned NBA MVP Nikola Jokic endured a "heartbreaking" injury to his knee while the Nuggets were defeated by a score of 147-123 against the Miami Heat.

The star player injured himself towards the end of the second quarter in an inadvertent coming together with fellow Nugget Spencer Jones.

His teammate landed on the footwear of Jokic, who immediately went down to the ground grabbing his knee.

The 30-year-old, that tops the NBA season in rebounds and dimes, recorded 21 points and eight dimes in the contest prior to incurring the injury.

The player will have an MRI on the following day to assess the severity of the problem.

"Instantly, Jokic knew something was wrong," said Nuggets coach Adelman.

"This happens in professional sports. Whoever who suffers an injury, that's difficult, most notably somebody as special as him. More information will come tomorrow."

"We will continue as a team. Obviously, at this moment, I'm focused about him as a person and the letdown of facing an event of that nature."
