While perhaps not at the same level as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the county's top official conducted a Donald Trump moment this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven. Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood. “This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. No offenses are on her docket,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued from the start of the commencement of a second term in office. “Except perhaps for eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” the mayor added. “Let this swine have a long and happy life without fear.” The gathering, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to emulate the yearly bird sparing at the White House. The swine, donated by a local firefighter, was christened after the current slang trend of young people shouting “six seven” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The trend became so widespread that a prominent word reference recently declared “6-7” its top term for the year. A New Life This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release. “The annual pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to open the festive period,” said the event host, in a particularly upbeat message. “It captures the character of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and grounded in customs that foster togetherness. Every time, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.” Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they marked the pig's pardon.
