Overtake Mode & Active Aero - Explaining F1's Updated Technical Language

The 2026 Formula 1 cars are designed to be lighter, more agile and sustainable than this year.

F1 has revealed the official terminology that will be used to explain the technical complexities of its revolutionary 2026 rulebook.

The racing series is embarking on what is arguably the most significant regulation change in its competitive history for the 2026 campaign, featuring new chassis and engine rules and the required adoption of eco-friendly fuels.

The new power units, which maintain the hybrid V6 layout, boast a substantially higher electrical capacity, driving key advancements in the cars' aerodynamics.

Over a race distance, competitors will carefully oversee battery power – potentially on flying laps – to extract the peak performance.

Broad surveys were conducted with a mix of viewers, including dedicated enthusiasts and casual observers, to identify which terms would aid comprehension of the key features of the 2026 changes.

The stated goal was to make a set of intricate technical aspects of the competition as accessible as possible for the widest audience.

Consequently, previous placeholder terms for certain devices – such as "modes labelled X and Z" for the moveable wings – have been abandoned in preference for intuitive labels that directly explain the real-world effect of the innovation.

Exploring the New Tech

Regulators explain that drivers will have more power to make decisions regarding power usage, harvesting, and conservation.

The upcoming changes introduce a set of functions that will be visually displayed on television graphics to improve the fans' insight of the on-track action.

  • Attack Mode: This supersedes the existing Drag Reduction System. It provides a surge of additional ERS power available when a competitor is close behind the leading car to facilitate an pass.
  • Extra Push Mode: This is a driver-operated energy deployment from the hybrid system that can be utilized during offensive or defensive moves. It provides the pilot maximum power at the push of a button.

Both of these strategic tools will have to be managed carefully, as the available electrical charge is restricted.

  • Adjustable Aero: Both the nose and rear wings move automatically – spreading on the straights for low aerodynamic resistance and higher speed, and angling down in the turns for peak grip.
  • Battery Recharge: Drivers can replenish their battery with energy harvested under braking, or during partial power application at the conclusion of a straight or in certain corners where only limited engine output is required.

2026 Car Specifications

The 2026 cars will be more compact and lighter relative to current models, with a wheelbase cut by 200mm to 3,400mm, width reduced by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the lowest permissible weight decreased by 30kg.

Cumulative downforce is expected to drop by approximately fifteen to thirty percent, although teams will inevitably claw this back as they optimize their packages.

Aerodynamic drag has been reduced by 40%. The vehicles will feature moveable wing elements – front and rear wings will adjust on the straights to improve speed and increase straightline speed and return into place for peak handling.

Wheels will retain the current rim size, but the rubber compounds will be narrower, by 25mm at the front and 30mm at the rear.

2026 Engine Regulations

The revised hybrid units will have an approximate 50-50 split in energy output by the internal combustion engine and the electrical system, increasing from about 20% battery contribution in the current formula.

The hybrid system is simplified through the removal of the Motor Generator Unit – Heat, the sophisticated and pricey component that recovered energy from the turbocharger.

Every car on the grid will be mandated to operate on 100% sustainable fuel, produced using plant-based materials or synthetic industrial processes.
