Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”

It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”

New York police issued security footage Monday of a suspect in the attack on the player. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.

The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday in the area between the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a child.

“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd was inactive during the current season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.

Boyd came to New York as a new signing in March and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on early August and was carted from the field.

Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while working his way back.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he attends every game. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
