Democratic lawmakers Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Execution

Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated outrage after Donald Trump charged a group of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and declared they should be detained and sentenced "with execution" following their posting of a controversial video.

The Content That Triggered the Debate

The video footage, published on earlier this week, includes six Democratic elected officials who formerly acted in military or defense roles.

"As we did, you all swore an pledge to defend and support this constitution," the representatives affirmed in the short video. "At present, the threats to our governing document are not only from abroad, but from domestically. Our laws are unambiguous, you can reject illegal orders, you can reject unlawful commands, you must reject unlawful commands. No one has to follow directives that break the statutes or our constitution."

Donald Trump's Furious Response

The video message seemed to provoke a furious reaction from the ex-president.

On Thursday morning, Trump wrote on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In an additional post, he stated: "This constitutes really concerning, and Harmful to our Country. Their words cannot be permitted to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a third message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Opposition Officials Respond

Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, Democratic leadership released a unified announcement condemning the statements.

"Political violence has no position in the United States," they declared. "Congress members who were featured in the video all worked our country with tremendous patriotism and honor. We strongly condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and risky death threats against elected officials, and call on House Republicans to strongly do the same."

The party representatives also said that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to guarantee the protection of these officials and their loved ones."

"Donald Trump must without delay take down these unhinged social media posts and retract his violent rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the announcement continued.

Lawmakers' Defiant Response

The officials who participated in the video also issued a declaration.

"We are ex-military personnel and security experts who love this nation and took an pledge to protect and uphold the founding document of the United States," they stated. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we intend to honor it. No threat, coercion, or call for violence will stop us from that fundamental obligation."

"The significant point is that the former president views it subject to penalty by death for us to repeat the legal requirements," they continued. "Our service members should understand that we have their backs as they execute their vow to the founding principles and responsibility to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our duty."

They continued: "All citizens must unite and censure the president's demands for our death and political violence. This is a moment for ethical certainty."

Further Governmental Responses

The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's remarks and published on digital platforms: "It's important to understand: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the capital punishment of elected officials."

He continued: "This constitutes an clear THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, all citizens – without partisan consideration – should denounce this right away and without qualification."

The Republican House speaker defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "This represents very dangerous, you have leading members of the legislature telling troops to disobey orders, I think that's historic in American history."

The Conservative representative also according to sources told journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the crime of treason" but that "attorneys have to parse the language and determine all that."

Administration Reaction

During a White House press conference on later that day, when inquired by a media member, "Would the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the White House press secretary answered: "Certainly not."

"It's important to note about what the former president is responding to," the spokesperson declared. "There are sitting members of the federal government who worked together to orchestrate a digital communication to individuals of the American armed forces, to current military personnel encouraging them to ignore the executive's proper directives."

She added: "The sanctity of our armed forces rests on the hierarchy, and if that structure is compromised, it can cause casualties, it can result in chaos, and that's what these congressional representatives ... are fundamentally encouraging."
