‘Civilians were slain in their beds’: disorder and violence prevail following taking of El Fasher

Nawal Khalil had been volunteering as a healthcare worker for three years within the South El Fasher hospital as the city became captured on Sunday by the RSF fighters. She was actively caring for the sick, featuring one senior woman in need of a transfusion, as the assault commenced.

“They killed six wounded soldiers along with civilians in their beds – including some women,” she says. “I don’t know what happened for my remaining patients. I had to run when they stormed the hospital.”

Khalil, 27, was shot in the right foot and her thigh during the RSF's seizure of the closeby army headquarters. She escaped from the city and walked for a day, injured and without food, to get to the settlement of Garney. “During the journey, they seized my mobile and cash,” she says. “I ended up with nothing.”

Over a thousand individuals – comprising women and children – journeyed by walking for 48 hours to arrive at Tawila town located in northern Darfur after fleeing El Fasher, which fell under control after an 18-month siege.

This settlement, about 34 miles (55km) west away from El Fasher, remains under the authority of the Sudan Liberation Army faction under Abdul Wahid Mohamed al-Nur's leadership.

On Tuesday, the allied Joint Forces – who are allied with Sudan’s army – charged the RSF for slaughtering in excess of 2,000 non-combatants following the urban center's takeover. The UN said that visual evidence showed depicting dozens of weaponless men being shot or lying dead, encircled by RSF combatants.”

Historical Background

Fighting broke out in Sudan's capital back on April 15, 2023 as a growing contest for power between the two main factions of the military regime eventually resulted in fatalities.

From one perspective stand the Sudanese military forces, that stay mostly faithful to General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the de facto head of state. Opposing him exist the irregular troops belonging to the RSF, a gathering of armed factions which support the ex-warlord General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, referred to as Hemedti.

The Rapid Support Forces were first created by the previous authoritarian leader Bashir's regime as a pro-Arab counterinsurgency force known as the Janjaweed, which soon became linked with massive human rights violations. In 2013, Bashir converted the organization into the Rapid Support Forces, using them to quell a recent insurrection within South Darfur.

The war has pushed Sudan into a terrible humanitarian disaster in modern times, according to UN officials. It has produced the planet's biggest displacement catastrophe, scattering more than 10 million people internally plus 4 million who escaped to bordering states, generating growing stress upon Chad and South Sudan.

Ongoing Developments

Based on eyewitness accounts, thousands more civilians continue to be held by the RSF and associated armed groups within Garney, south-west of El Fasher. Many are former soldiers from Sudan's armed forces, the collaborative forces and other armed groups that had been fighting alongside the army. They are reportedly being held since they cannot pay ransom demands of between 5m and 10m Sudanese pounds (£6,000 to £12,000), per those who escaped who reached Tawila. Individuals incapable of paying have been detained for days, and occasionally let go solely after becoming gravely ill.

Reports suggest the SLA-AW has authorized army soldiers running from El Fasher to enter Tawila on condition they surrender their weapons.

A man named Adam Yagoub, twenty-eight years old, a chauffeur from Sennar within central Sudan, narrowly escaped being killed subsequent to his seizure by three armed men mounted on camels in the Garney vicinity.

“They wanted to cut my head off with a blade,” he informs, exhibiting his limb, that one combatant struck using an AK-47 rifle butt. “Subsequently one identified me – his sibling had collaborated with me – and begged them not to kill me. There were 18 of us who exited El Fasher as a group, but only eight made it to Tawila. I assume the others died.”

Yagoub states he witnessed 22 deceased individuals near what he called a deceptive well employed by the RSF and associated militias in the area connecting Garney and Tawila. “This is an ambush,” he explains. “Persons journey daily without hydration, and when they get to it, the militias are waiting. They murdered 22 males at that location and removed the corpses to obscure them.”

Another nurse who fled the El Fasher South medical facility subsequent to Sunday's offensive said RSF fighters entered via one entrance and began shooting at patients in the ER section, killing at least eight. “We escaped through a different gate, however they struck my head with a firearm,” he says.

Via a recorded message last Wednesday, the head of the RSF, General Dagalo, called Hemedti, said that any soldier or official who breached the rights of any civilian would be punished.

Numerous individuals who fled El Fasher utilized hours concealing themselves near military artillery before running west under cover of darkness. Families already uprooted from the city’s Abu Shouk camp were forced to move again, finding shelter in Daraja Oula area prior to ultimately traveling to Tawila.

Those captured by the RSF in Garney were reportedly given {water mixed with flour|flour
