The person was a beach patrol officer, running at full speed towards Bondi without shoes from the nearby Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while carrying a defibrillator. “I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I only caught a glimpse of this streak in blue,” she recalls. “He was just flying past. He was the only one moving in the path that all the others was trying to get away from, carrying that sizeable pack and barefoot … He moved at something that undoubtedly every instinct would tell you to go in the reverse way. “Absolutely no pause, but just totally pedal to the metal running.” An Iconic Image of Bravery Amidst Tragedy The photo taken by Ching of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as one of many moments of heroism in the aftermath of the terror attack.
