A Emotional Moment when Rosenior Transcends Obstacles

"Rosenior represents an excellent tactician who knows the game inside out, and that's what matters most.

"But, in my role as Chelsea's first African heritage footballer, it would be dishonest if I said this appointment does not affect me."

Those are the sentiments of Paul Canoville, who earned his groundbreaking debut for the Blues' first team off the bench in April 1982.

On Tuesday, Chelsea appointed RC Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior, aged 41, as their next head coach following the departure of manager Enzo Maresca.

The French club is part of the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned ownership group that also owns the London club.

There have been a mere 12 black head coaches – excluding individuals in temporary caretaker roles – in the Premier League since it began thirty-four years ago.

"One thing that impresses me regarding Rosenior is that he grew up and played not far from here, he understands this area," continued Canoville.

"When youngsters observe someone like Liam managing the team they support, someone who looks like them, who's from their ends, from a family that fights for what's right… that's profound demonstrating that opportunities exist.

"So yes, this represents a massive moment for Chelsea, for London, for every aspiring individual with big dreams.

"However, currently? We must support Rosenior, provide him with what he needs, and let the man do his work."

What Does the Numbers Indicate?

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit became Chelsea manager back in the nineties thereby becoming the Premier League's inaugural African heritage head coach.

Twelve years later, in 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the first black English boss in the top flight after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the only other present Premier League gaffer from a minority ethnic background.

The lack of managers of colour across English football is matched by an absence of representation in the boardroom.

As per the Black Footballers Partnership 2023's study, forty-three percent of Premier League players are from African or Caribbean backgrounds.

However, analysis by Kick It Out revealed just 3.2% of executive and leadership positions at most Premier League clubs are held by people from ethnically diverse communities.

At first-team coaching level, according to figures provided by 11 clubs, the percentage stands at two percent.

For all coaching positions – encompassing senior roles – from the same 11 clubs, the statistic is five percent.

"He's certainly made history in terms of him being announced as a Chelsea head coach, and as an organization, we want to witness more such appointments," said the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"We know there is a wealth of ability present within black and underrepresented groups... they want the opportunity to show what they can do. It is imperative to continue to striving to dismantle those barriers once and for all."

Additionally, the new appointee is set to become one of only four full-time British head coaches currently in the Premier League – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Scott Parker – which trails Europe's other major leagues in terms of homegrown managers.

Sixteen of the 20 first division managers in Italy are Italian, Eleven in La Liga in Spain, Twelve of the 18 are German and 10 in Ligue 1 in France.

The present Blues interim boss Calum McFarlane said: "I have no doubt all aspiring British managers from an academy background will be, in some way regardless of allegiance, rooting for Liam.

"It is really motivating for up-and-coming British coaches in the system to see an individual land that job with his background and we hope he does highly successful."

It is vital to remember – his appointment is on merit'

Leroy Rosenior, Liam's father, had a career with clubs such as West London clubs, West Ham and Queens Park Rangers, with his coaching stint culminating in a five-month stint at the third-tier club Brentford in 2006.

In 2019, he received a Member of the Order of the British Empire in that year's Honours List for services rendered in combating discrimination in football and wider society.

When Rosenior Jr retired from playing he pursued his father's footsteps. He started penning articles for The Guardian, where in 2017 he acknowledged the lack of diversity among managers. He pointed out that race does not influence ability and said opportunities must be awarded on merit.

He further expressed a point he has often stated: that significant under-representation leads to a failure to understand of players from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

During an interview with The Athletic FC, he explained the way his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "hard to manage" and "emotional", noting that he understood the Dutch player with Nigerian parentage. The striker is expected to join him in moving from Strasbourg to Chelsea this summer.

In subsequent newspaper articles, he also confessed to being "ashamed" upon hearing a coach utter a homophobic slur. He pledged support for the Premier League's Rainbow Laces campaign and authored an open letter to the former US President during his first US presidency, condemning his "overt" racism.

He has subsequently made his name in the dugout – initially with Hull City, then Strasbourg – and Wayne Rooney said this week Rosenior was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" after their time together at Derby County.

Rosenior said his farewells at Strasbourg on Tuesday morning prior to putting pen to paper on a six‑and‑a‑half‑year contract at Chelsea.
