🔗 Share this article A Account of Surprising Generosity: When a University Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dormitory Floor Back in the year 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. I assumed I would book lodging when I arrived, yet when I arrived, a large conference was happening and every single backpackers hostels and budget accommodation had no vacancies. As a visitor from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind perhaps I could spend the night at the terminal – but soon learned the local airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, closes all night. With no idea quite what to do and feeling increasingly desperate, I caught public transport and found myself drifting towards a gaming venue, believing I could pass those hours in an establishment that was open 24/7. Admittedly, this plan at my peak to succeed at an interview the next day, yet, as a student on a tight budget, I couldn’t afford. Our society requires more people with such compassion. It seems I seemed lost since a woman saw me wandering around the city and asked whether I needed help. I explained my situation and immediately she offered I could crash on the floor of her dormitory at ANU – which was perfect, considering that was where the important interview was the following day. She went further by offering me some free dinner: a leftover sandwiches she brought back her work shift. I was able to use a hot shower and a secure location and secure to spend the night. Looking back, I now understand the enormous leap of faith she took as a young woman allowing a man she’d just met crash at her place. Back then I existed within my own unawareness and not even thinking to such safety concerns. Today, as a parent, it astounds me she offered that help – and remain incredibly thankful. Ultimately, I did not attending the Australian National University, and I never saw the student afterwards, but I’ve never forgotten her amazing act of generosity. My sincere desire is that life has rewarded her generosity abundantly. Our society requires more folks who show such kindness.
